Anti-Racist Statement
At Grit City Books, we stand united against racism in all its forms and are committed to taking tangible actions that actively promote anti-racism within our community and beyond.
We acknowledge that systemic racism perpetuates inequality and injustice, and we are dedicated to dismantling these structures through education, reflection, and action. We commit to continuously examining our practices, policies, and partnerships to ensure they align with our anti-racist values.
Through our curated selection, events, and collaborations, we strive to amplify the voices of authors and creators from marginalized communities, providing a platform for stories that challenge stereotypes, inspire empathy, and encourage critical conversations.
We recognize that becoming an anti-racist establishment is an ongoing process that requires open dialogue, self-awareness, and a willingness to learn from our mistakes. We invite our community to hold us accountable and join us in fostering a bookstore that not only reflects the diversity of human experiences but actively contributes to the dismantling of racism in all its forms.
Grit City Books is dedicated to being a space where people can engage with anti-racist literature, share perspectives, and work collectively to create a more just and equitable society.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
At Grit City Books, we wholeheartedly believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not merely concepts, but fundamental pillars of our identity. Our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive community goes beyond words; it's ingrained in every facet of our bookstore's existence.
Diversity: We celebrate the kaleidoscope of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives that make our community vibrant. Our bookstore is a space where all are welcomed and valued for their unique contributions.
Equity: We strive for equity in every interaction, recognizing that fairness requires understanding and addressing the varied challenges individuals may face. We endeavor to provide equal access to resources, opportunities, and experiences, ensuring that everyone can thrive.
Inclusion: We actively create an environment where everyone feels not just welcome, but truly included. We promote open dialogue, respect, and understanding, fostering connections that transcend differences and enrich the collective experience.
Through our curated collection, events, and partnerships, we aim to amplify marginalized voices, challenge biases, and engage in meaningful conversations. As a locally owned independent bookstore with LGBTQ+ ownership, we are committed to continuously learning, growing, and evolving in our journey toward a more just and inclusive society.
Grit City Books stands as a testament to the power of embracing diversity, championing equity, and nurturing a culture of inclusion. We invite all members of our community to join us on this shared path of enlightenment and growth.
Occupied Land Statement
At Grit City Books, we acknowledge that our store resides on the traditional and unceded territory of the Puyallup Tribe, and that we serve customers across the broader Coast Salish tribal lands. We honor and respect the Puyallup Tribe's enduring connection to and stewardship of this land, where they have lived since the beginning of time, and continue to do so today.
We recognize the history of colonization, displacement, and injustice that the Puyallup Tribe and Indigenous communities across the country have endured. As we operate on this land, we commit to learning about and acknowledging its history, and to actively supporting the Puyallup Tribe's efforts to protect their sovereignty, culture, and rights.
Grit City Books is committed to creating a space that fosters understanding, amplifies Indigenous voices, and advocates for the ongoing struggles for justice and equity faced by Indigenous communities. We invite our community to join us in acknowledging the Puyallup Tribe's enduring presence and to engage in dialogue that promotes reconciliation, healing, and a more equitable future.
